Ideal Winter Boot

The reliable winter boots for women usually do not just provide warmth both for feet. Together with the warming insulation, an ideal winter boot also need to be waterproof and, first and foremost, stylish.

Winter boots for women are not just fashionable but in addition functional. These snow boots or winter shoes as they are sometimes called, normally can be found in leather or sheepskin.

What else in case you search for when searching for winter boots? What needs to be checked for when shopping for winter boots for females? Listed here are the few tips in finding the right boots that will meet your needs.

A good tread on the boots will prevent anyone from slipping on snows and icy patches on the ground. Some boots for women do not have reliable treads as they often look bulky. Considering the safety it will provide to the women, it is best to really have winter boots installed with treads.

Winter boots are meant to be wet. It is essential the boots are made entirely of waterproof materials to ensure that both feet are kept warm and dry inside them.

Although it is a given that most boots will really be a bit heavier than other kinds of footwear, there are boots that are made with lightweight materials to make walking in the snow comfortable. The lighter your boots are, the better as it is easier to wear them as you walk through snow.

All boots for women should have an ankle support. Especially with winter boots as slipping is common on snow covered pavements. Height is also as important which can be determined generally by the activities that you do. Taller boots are the best for women who are comfortable with hiking over snowy trails while shorter ones are okay for most sidewalks.

Most people fail to recognize the importance of having boots that fit snugly on the feet. Even if they consider the number of socks to be put on before the boots, it really is not necessary as even with just using a layer of winter socks on, a snug fit boot will more than provide for the needed insulation.

Ugg sheepskin boots are highly popular every winter. Made with a waterproof quality leather or suede exterior, or a genuine twin-face grade A sheepskin upper as in the evergreen UGG Classic Short Boots, and internally lined with genuine sheepskin insoles, keeping your feet warm and cozy despite the freezing temperature. Sheepskin are known for their insulating properties, odor-free and has the ability to wick away moisture, thus keeping your feet warm during winter and cool during summer. Treating your brand new winter boots with an authentic UGG Sheepskin Care Kit protects against stains and enhances their waterproof qualities.

Cute winter boots such as the Sorel Cumberland with its Sherpa pile snow cuff comes fitted with padded nylon uppers which contribute to keeping your feet toasty and dry in all types of weather conditions, be it heavy snow or blizzards. Boots with faux fur trimmings and laces add a dash of elegance, feminine and warmth to the wearer. Sorel boots are well-known for their waterproof leather and their seam sealed construction, leading qualities in a pair of much sought after boots for comfort and warmth. Sorel snow boots are fitted with a removable and washable ThermoPlus felt inner boot liner, adding even more comfort and warmth to your otherwise cold feet.

The latest women's winter boots even come with eco-friendly features. Take for example the Timberland Earthkeepers Duck boots. The inside lining of the Mount Holly duck boots are made from recycled PET fleece, giving great warmth and comfort. The cotton laces are 50% recycled and the outsole consist of 42% recycled rubber, providing excellent traction on all types of surfaces. Wear the boots with the knowledge that you are doing your little bit to save the environment.

Some prefer ankle length boots whereas others love their knee-high ones. Knee high boots are great if walking in slush and mud or deep snow as these boots can easily keep out the icy snow and water due to their heights. Whether zipper or lace-up boots, both can look trendy and fashionable, especially if decorated with beads or buckles. Whether match with skirts or jeans, boots compliment the wearer, adding chic and elegance to her fashion style.

Invest in a pair of good quality winter boots to keep your feet warm, comfortable and dry this winter. Good quality winter boots, if well-taken care of, can last for many years.

What The Difference Between Snow Boots and Winter Boots?

Men are not that fashion forward compared to women. This results to men usually buying just what they need, or sometimes what they think they need. And because of this, when men want winter boots they sometimes buy snow boots and vice versa thinking that they are all the same. But when buying these kinds of boots, they should know one important thing: snow boots and winter boots are not really the same thing.

Just because they are both designed to keep feet warm, they were not really made to perform the same function. The snow version have many features that normal boots might not have. For example, they are not just made for traversing through piles and piles of snow, they are also designed to be worn in wet conditions. Many styles usually feature insulation meant to keep feet warm even in the most brutally cold weather, since frostbite is a risk when it comes to having cold feet.

Snow boots are usually heavier and are designed for people who will spend most of their time in snow and even other wintry weather conditions. Normal boots on the other hand are designed with warmth in mind, although some offer better warming capabilities that are designed for snow.

Winter boots may be more fashionable than snow boots but are designed for general winter use and cannot give the protection and warmth that a good snow boot does. If you will be walking in piles and piles of snow, you may want to consider purchasing a pair of boots specifically designed for that purpose. These manufacturers usually give temperature ratings for their products and they specify whether or not the they were built for heavy cold weather activity.

If you want to keep the snow out, make sure that they be at least above the hem of your pants most especially above the ankle. The uppers should be made of leather or nylon and should feature taped or sealed seams for added moisture protection. But there are other boots that have a fleece collar or cuff, a drawstring closure at the top of the boot to help keep snow out.

The soles of the boot, no matter the type, should be made of 100% waterproof material like rubber, since waterproof soles in boots provide protection from wet and cold conditions as well as maintains the cleanliness of your boot easily. With rubber soles, they can be simply hosed down or rinsed off.

I placed this order as a gift for my wife, who is always complaining of getting wet and being unable to purchase a fully 100% waterproof long coat. I Looked on my trusted Amazon website and found this product, it was easy to order and arrived in just a few days. Having worn the coat my wife is delighted and says it not only 100% waterproof, but comfortable and stylish as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! 2 Nov 2010
By Courtney P

Colour Name:Navy|Size Name:10

I just moved to Scotland from the US south, and was quite unprepared for the rainy, windy weather. On my second day here, I walked 4 miles in pouring down/blowing in my face rain, and determined that I need SOMETHING to avoid becoming completely drenched through every layer from head to toe. I borrowed my flatmate's short rain jacket, but found that my trousers became soaked. This was one of the only full length waterproof coats I found, and it's really been perfect for this weather. I like that there's a detachable hood so I can wear my warmer coat underneath if the climate requires it and use the warmer hood. I thought I would look like I was wearing a big sack, especially since I got a size bigger than I would normally wear, but it's really not bad looking at all. It's also light to carry about in changeable weather. I've been quite happy with this coat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Delivery costs have put me off this item. 7 April 2013

Colour Name:Chinchilla|Size Name:18|Amazon Verified Purchase

When I odered his item reviews said thecot was generous in size and to order next size down which I did, when the coat came and I tried it on it did not fit. Having paid for delivery and another £5-20 to return it the coat has cost me around £9 just to try yhe coat on.
Sadly this is the first disappointment I have had when buying goods thruogh Amazon.
I liked the coat but am not going to send for another just to pay that amount again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful coat for dog walkers 11 Oct 2011
By elanmc

Colour Name:Garnet|Size Name:14|Amazon Verified Purchase

Living in the beautiful but wet Lake District, I needed a coat that would keep me warm and dry when out walking my 2 dogs. This coat fulfills the role really well. I thought it might be too long at first but with my wellies on as well, I'm completely covered and don't have to rush home to change out of wet clothes anymore.I would definitely recommend it to anyone who walks dogs regularly.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK 15 Mar 2011
By Shelly

Colour Name:Blackberry|Size Name:12|Amazon Verified Purchase

I got the size 12 in blackberry but maybe i should have gone for a size 10 or 8. i'm 5"4
I expected the top portion to be a little bigger as i am usually a size 10 on top and size 12 on bottom, The bottom portion fits fine with some space over my hips but the top felt 2 or 3 sizes bigger, the arms especially.
I was warm enough with a light cardigan underneath in late January. Kept me dry in medium london showers.
Good length, althought at times the wind would get in and inflate the coat also the back pleats would get caught in between my feet.
Nice colour, i like purple/ plum colours

4.0 out of 5 stars Coat for wet dog walks 14 Oct 2010
By Mad dogs and Englishwoman

Colour Name:Blackberry|Size Name:10

Amazing how few full-length waterproof coats there are. This is just the ticket for walking dogs in wet weather and not having to change your clothes after. Buy a coloured coat, match or clash with coloured wellies and cheer up the day!

3.0 out of 5 stars Be wary about sizing down + ignore blackberry image colour 21 Oct 2013
By Lady H.

Amazon Verified Purchase

I sized down on this as most people said it was the sensible thing to do. I am a 10-12 so went for 10. Tight across back and sleeves too short. Wish I had gone with 12 instead. Please check their size guide very carefully. The sizes are different for their Heritage range and their standard range.

Colour way off the mark. Ordered blackberry as thought it would be, well, blackberry. Turned out to be more like Amethyst - definitely light purple and never seen a blackberry, or even a Ribena berry for that matter. If you are going to order blackberry look at the matching hat - more like the true colour - and even that is darker than the actual coat. SUBSEQUENT EMAIL FROM BEST OF THE COUNTRY SAID THAT THEY KNOW SOME OF THE COLOURS ARE WRONG BUT WERE UPLOADED BY ANOTHER SELLER AND AMAZON WILL NOT CHANGE THEM OR LET THEM CHANGE THEM. PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT SOME OTHER ITEMS - PREFERABLY ON THE JACK MURPHY WEBSITE FIRST TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE ORDERING THE CORRECT COLOUR because some of the colours on Amazon are wrong.

Sent it back and queried why I had not had a postage refund - hence found out the issue with colours above. Best of the Country gave me a goodwill refund but if you do your homework you will not go through this hassle. Material, lining and length all perfect. Hood a bit mean, but lightweight.

I then decided to pay a bit more for an oilskin and found this Kakadu lightweight breathable version from a seller based in Germany - take a look Kakadu Traditional Oilskin Drover, made from MicroWax, 2O10. Unlike Drizabone it come half way down my wellies (5ft6) and does not reach the floor like Drizabone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasons for not giving the coat a higher rating., 3 Nov 2013
By rochefmp

This review is from: Jack Murphy Malvern Bush Coat (Misc.)

When a coat says it's cotton lined there is perhaps an assumption that it is lined throughout. However this coat, as with so many others, does not have a cotton lining in the sleeves. This is a MAJOR disappointment. The styling and practicality of the coat is good but the lack of cotton lining in the sleeves means it will NOT be entirely comfortable in warm wet weather - which is what it surely was designed for??????

1.0 out of 5 stars beware, 22 Oct 2013
By chayla "chayla" (spain)

This review is from: Jack Murphy Malvern Bush Coat (Misc.)

I know these come up large but this coat is huge, like a bell tent, even allowing for wearing thick layers of clothing underneath it, it swamped me. did not consider changing for smaller size as I had to pay courier fees to return it, so be careful if you order from this supplier. colour was more like deep navy than amethyst, agree the photo looks bu tthen the other photos on website did not all tally with colour description. rang the company but they sounded disinterested. today I saw same coat locally at cheaper price and could have tried it on, so waste of my money to pay carriage both ways, however I have since bought a waxed coat which I am more than pleased with.

How to Choose the Right Vet For Your Cat

The vet is your cat's best friend (second to you of course!), so you need to make sure that they are well qualified for the job. Some people are fine with the closest vet to their home, however, that isn't always a great idea; would you just use the closest doctor's office for your child?

It is better to choose a clinic that is professional, and has a high standard of care. Choosing the right vet for your cat can be a tricky task, so here are three great tips to ensure that your precious kitty gets the best vet possible!

Tip 1
The first tip I am going to share with you is, never pick an unknown vet! This is because if you pick one that you don't know anything about, you don't know what kind of service you and your cat will receive. It is important if you can, to get personal recommendations from friends and family. This is because you will be able to trust their judgement, and know that your cat will be in good hands.

If no one you know has a pet, then of course there are other ways to find a great vet. Check for adverts in newspapers, magazines and of course online. It is always a good idea to check the online reviews of different vets, so you can see what other users think.
You want the right vet for your cat, so it is worthwhile doing what research and background checks you can, to ensure your lovely kitty is treated right!

Tip 2
Making an effort to visit the clinic you are considering is the next tip I am going to give you. This is quite an important tip, because you are giving yourself the chance to check that it will provide a high standard of care for your cat, and that the staff will act professionally. You will get to see how the staff treats its customers, and most especially your cat of course! You will also get a sense of waiting times, how good the diagnosing equipment is, and the general ambiance of the clinic.

Tip 3
The final tip I want to share with you, is actually making an appointment for your cat to see the vet you have been researching. One appointment does not commit you with that vet, and you are free to change if you feel that a good job isn't being done. You want the right vet for your cat, so don't settle for anything less!

During the appointment, pay the vet close attention. Do you think they handle your pet well? Do they give them the attention they deserve? Is your cat comfortable with him or her? These are all questions you should keep in mind during the visit, and if the answer is no to any of them, then you may be more comfortable with a different one.

Also, make sure that any questions that you may have about your cat's health and well being are answered thoroughly, and that you don't feel confused about anything the vet is telling you. This is important because you want to know exactly how your pet is, and if there is anything extra you need to watch out for when taking care of him or her.

And so there you have it, three helpful tips to help you choose the right vet for your cat! Choosing the best vet for your cat's health can be taxing, but if you keep these tips in mind whilst researching and deciding, you can be sure that your cat's health will be in safe hands!

Ways To Keep Any Roof In Suitable Condition

So many residents are not sure how to care for the roof of their home, mainly because they feel it is very daunting. While taking a class at a local hardware store is a possibility, hiring a roofing contractor is the route many homeowners decide to go. However, if you are hoping to save some money, then follow a few of the tips here to make sure your roof is in the best condition for as long as possible.

You should always check the roof annually. However, it should be checked throughout the winter and spring due to harsher weather conditions. When you are checking your roof, make sure you look for any spots where water is dripping through and there is not any conditions that would encourage leaks to form.

It is extremely dangerous, and even fatal, to inspect your roof during a storm. If it is raining or snowing outside, do not take the chance to climb upon the roof. Place buckets where the dripping is occurring and then fix the problems once the roof is completely dry.

You will notice that the water is more likely to pool in the crevices of your roof where draining is prohibited. Make sure your shingles are very strong in these areas and fix any broken shingles you find. Remember that it is very important that everything lay completely flat for the most effective way to preserve the foundation underneath. You do not want any shingles coming loose or nails popping out. If you find any damage, you will want to make sure the rest of your roof is undamaged.

While extremely economical, it is a poor decision to look into short-term repairs. When you invest the time and money into permanent fixes, you are likely to get a longer life out of your roof. This means you will spend less money in the long run.

If price is a concern, look at ecologically safe products. Recycled products and solar panels will help you save money, both in the repairs of your roof and by lowering the utility bills.

After reading this, you should feel a little more knowledgeable on how to care for your home. By performing the required maintenance, you can preserve the life of your roof. If you start small and perform the maintenance throughout the year, it will not seem as daunting. However, there are roofing professionals that can still provide assistance if you are not comfortable.

Post Winter Inspection: Does Your Roof and Guttering Still Make the Grade?

South Australia enjoys a wonderful temperate climate, but our homes are still regularly subjected to the forces of nature, testing the very limits of even the sturdiest constructions.

One of the most important structural components of any home is the roof and guttering, which together, ensure your home stays dry and secure in even the most extreme weather. But time and damage can eventually result in this waterproof barrier being breached, leading to serious structural damage.

Spring; a great time to inspect for signs of damage

A good practice for every homeowner is to regularly inspect the roof and guttering for signs of weather damage or age related deterioration, and the perfect time to do it is spring. The skies are clear, and the ravages of winter storms are gone for another year.

Roofing and guttering generally last many years, but when weather related damage or deterioration begins, the external signs that indicate something is wrong can often be quite subtle despite significant, but hidden structural damage already developing.

Structural damage from a leaking roof or failing guttering system can result in permanent damage to foundations, roof and wall timbers; irreversible ceiling, internal wall and carpet damage; water penetration into electrical wiring and light fittings; and even a complete or partial ceiling collapse.

In most cases, a self inspection can be done from ground level, but for a proper assessment, you may need to get a closer look from a ladder. Inspecting attached carports, verandahs and room extensions can also be done from ground level, but it is much more accurate from the roof.

If you don't feel comfortable about climbing ladders, or you would like a professional opinion about the condition of your roof or guttering, we would be more than happy to send one of our trained Roof Technicians to conduct an obligation free inspection.

Gutters

Early Symptoms

Dirty marks may be seen forming on the timber and scotia beneath the gutter. You may also see rusted nails in the Scotia, a tell-tale sign that moisture is trapped behind the timber.

To the untrained eye, these symptoms may seem like a problem originating in the timber, but they are almost always caused by a leaking corner or join in the gutter. These subtle marks can take up to 20 years before they begin to appear, and may seem relatively harmless, but beneath the surface there is a potential catastrophe unfolding.

The continuous seepage of water from the gutter becomes trapped behind the scotia and fascia. Because of the absorbent nature of timber, the trapped moisture is drawn into the fibres of the timber causing wood rot. This fungal disease completely destroys the structural integrity of the timber, eventually causing it to collapse, often without warning.

Point to remember: If you see dirty-marks or water-marks on your fascia or scotia, and it's near a join or a corner of your gutters, you can be almost certain that water is leaking from your gutters.

Advanced Symptoms

Advanced symptoms of rusted guttering and water damage can become very obvious after only just a few years of constant leaking.

Once guttering has reached a stage where it has rusted through and falling off the fascia, it not only becomes completely ineffective at channeling water away from your home, there is also the very real risk of it collapsing and causing physical injury.

The longer guttering is left in this state, the more extensive the damage to your property. Water running into the foundations of your home can create serious structural problems. Timber fascia's and scotia can become so damaged by wood rot that they will all need replacing. There is even the risk that wood rot can spread into major timber structures such as the ends of roof trusses.

Guttering is like any maintenance problem in your home. The longer you leave it the more damage it is going to cause, and the more complex the problem becomes.

If you can see rusty guttering, water dripping under carports and verandahs, or there is any evidence of water damage to timberwork, you know that urgent attention is required to prevent serious structural damage. It really is time to call in the experts.

Iron Roof

Signs of Rust

The first thing to look for on an iron roof is signs of rust. At first, there may not be any obvious patches of rust, simply a dark or rusty looking streak appearing on the roof surface. Even the smallest indicator is a sign of a much larger problem. By the time rust finally breaks through, there is usually a large part of the iron that has been compromised by sub-surface rust.

Loose Nails or TekScrews

Keep a look out for missing or raised roofing nails or tek screws. If you spot one, then you can almost be sure there will be more, particularly on old roofs that are fixed with roofing nails. Even if the roof looks in place despite the odd missing nail or screw, there is a strong risk of leaks as the roof is no longer sealed. There is also the risk that wind can get under the sheet and lift it off the roof altogether, and without warning.

It goes bang in the night

At times, you may also be able to hear the occasional tell-tale sounds of a sheet of iron banging in strong wind, or when the wind direction is coming from an unusual direction. The banging will confirm that one or more sheets are unsecure and need to be fixed quickly to prevent damage to your home.

It is very rare that an issue with an iron roof is localized to one area. Once symptoms begin to show in one area, it's only a matter of time before they show across the entire roof. The most effective solution is to replace the roof before water leaks lead to structural damage.

Tiled Roof

Tiled roofs are amazingly durable, but they do deteriorate over time due to the suns relentless baking over many years. There is also movement caused through the roofs own weight, and expansion and contraction of supporting timbers due to daily temperature variations, particularly in summer.

So what do you need to look out for?

Loose ridge capping and broken mortar

The sight of ridge caps that have moved and mortar that has been partially or completely displaced is a common sign that the roof is in need of repair. Not only is the risk of leaks high, but if an unsecure ridge cap was to suddenly slide down the roof in heavy rain, serious flooding could occur from just one rain event.

Cracked tiles

A cracked tile is a certain cause of roof leaks. Often, the tile will be cracked the full width of its surface, particularly if someone has stood on the unsupported centre. There may also be seemingly harmless cracks or breaks across the corner of a tile. Both will leak and need to be replaced.

Cracked tiles can be hard to spot, and may appear to be nothing more than a dark line across the surface. Over time, the crack will continue to open as the tile separates, turning a few drips into a serious leak.

Mould and grime covered surface

During the inspection, you may notice that your tiled roof is becoming covered in mould and grime, which seems to get a little worse each year. While this won't cause your roof to leak, it is very unhealthy if you use the collected water to drink or wash clothes and dishes. A roof in this state is covered in pathogens and fungal spores. As the coating of mould and grime worsens, the self-cleaning characteristics of the tile are lost and the surface becomes an organic layer.

Restoring your roof to its former glory

Most tiled roofs eventually reach a point where most, if not all of the symptoms we have just discussed are visible, indicating that it's time to do something about it. Fortunately, it is possible to restore a tiled roof to its former glory aesthetically and functionally. To find out more, take a look at our Roof Restoration page.

Structural damage to timbers

A hidden but serious problem is damage to the concealed structural timber supporting the roof. This can be indicated by a localized sag in a part of the roof, or just a lack of uniformity in the overall appearance of the roof. Tiled roofs are extremely heavy compared to an iron roof, so when structural timbers like roof trusses are damaged - such as through White Ant infestation or Wood Rot - the load is forced onto other timbers, creating an ever expanding structural problem.

While timber repairs to the existing tiled roof are possible, many homeowners preferred solution is to have the tiled roof converted to an iron roof.

If the Colorado met a performance street hiker then this would be the result. A real utilitarian look has been achieved with the Sleater from it's d-ring facing hardware and injected mouldings on the quarters to the fleece lining and waterproof performance qualities.

Guide to Repair a Roof

It always helps to have a solid roof over our head. Unfortunately, there are times when the roof is going need to be repaired and this is something that you may be able to take care of on your own. If you are a little bit handy and have access to some basic hand tools, you can do some of the more basic roof repairs that will help keep you and your home dry on the inside. Here are some of the more common roof repairs that may need done and how you can do it.

One of the more common repairs that need to be done on a roof is replacing the shingle that has become damaged or that is missing altogether. It is much easier for you to do this when the weather is cool, although it is also possible to do it with warm weather when the sun is hitting the roof directly. You will need to cool down the single, however, and this can be done with some ice water. After you have cooled the shingle, if necessary, separate the shingle from the others using a prybar. The sealant that is under the shingle should pop up easily if you have cooled sufficiently. It is also going to be necessary for you to remove nails from the shingle that is above it, as they go through the shingle that you are replacing as well.

Once the damaged shingle has been removed, you are going to need to replace it with a new one. Try to choose one that is as close to the color of the shingle as is possible. You may have some left over from when the roof was originally replaced, but there may be a slight color difference due to fading from the sun. Once you have put the shingle in place and attached it according to manufacturer's instructions, you will need to seal it. Keep in mind, the old sealant is not going to work once the damaged shingle has been removed. You will need to use new sealant, which will help to keep the shingle from blowing away.

If you're going to be replacing the shingle on the ridge cap, it is important for you to do so properly. This is an area of the roof that can easily allow water to enter. Once water gets a foothold inside of the home, it can cause rot and mold. Remove any of the damaged parts of the shingle and loosen the surrounding shingles without damaging them. Choose a new ridge shingle that matches the existing shingles, both in thickness and in color. Be sure that you install it in a way that will cover the ridge vent and attach it according to manufacturer's instructions.

Taking care of any roof repair that is necessary promptly will help to ensure that you keep damage from occurring inside of the home. Be sure you set aside plenty of time to do these minor repairs so that they can be done in a days time. It is not difficult to do, but it is something that needs to be done properly.

Lower Energy Costs With an Eco-Friendly, Stylish Metal Roof

Homebuilders and homeowners considering roofing options should take a look at metals roofs, a fast-growing home and green improvement trend. Metal roofing has evolved into an environmentally conscious industry that features high-quality, lightweight, long-lasting and recyclable materials that can be fashioned to mimic almost any roofing style. Think of it as a material upgrade on asphalt, clay, wood, and other traditional (and less durable) materials.

Tax Breaks and Energy Savings

Certain roofing materials are Energy Star® rated by the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA for reducing energy costs. Roofs installed in 2012 or 2013 are eligible for tax credits up to $500 through December 31, 2013. This only applies to principal residences.

Metal roofs qualify for Energy Star ratings and can lower roof temperatures by up to 100° and reduce peak cooling demand by 15%, according to EnergyStar.gov. They also provide better insulation against heat and cooling losses. Researchers from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that these roofs lower heat loss in winter by nine percent, and reduce heat gain in summer by 37.6% compared to asphalt roofs.

How does this work? Metal roofing products reflect-rather than absorb-sunlight, which means the house below stays cooler. The insulation installed under them conserves heat in winter and colder climates. They also melt snow and ice more quickly, removing the threat of ice buildup, icicles, or ice damming that can occur when snow backs up against eaves.

Style and Durability

Metal roofs don't have to look like they're well, metal. Manufacturers have created styles and coatings to mimic the look of traditional roofing materials. As for durability, few homeowners ever need to replace one of these roofs on their own dime. The Metal Roofing Alliance, an organization of roof manufacturers, paint companies, distributors, and contractors, says most of these roofs are expected to last 30 to 50 years and come with warranties to cover these periods. Asphalt roofs typically need replacement every 25 years or so.

Because these roofs deteriorate much more slowly than competing products, insurance companies in several states offer discounts up to 30% for homes sporting them. In addition, these roofs are non-combustible and have a Class A fire rating, the highest possible. Wood and shingles are rated at the lower Class C. In addition, these eco-friendly roofs are 100% recyclable, and recycled materials contribute to about 25% of the manufacturing process.

Myths About Metal Roofing

Here are some answers to common misperceptions about these high quality roofs:

1. Lightening risk. Metal conducts electricity but is not drawn to it. Since they are non-combustible, they are safer as well.
2. Noise factor in rain. Properly installed metal roofs are placed over attics and insulation and are as quiet as other roofs.
3. Hail damage. Normal-size hail will not damage a them. In addition, texturing makes dents less visible if they do occur.
4. No walking allowed. There are ways to walk on these roofs without damaging them. Check with the manufacturer.
5. Poor resale value. Not so, says Yahoo!Homes, which mentions metal shingles that look like slate as an affordable and attractive remodeling investment option. In fact, in snowy parts of the country, a metal roof is likely to attract potential buyers and even may be a factor in the seller getting a higher price.

Roof Maintenance Tips for Rainy Climates

In some cities, the rainy season is essentially year-long. With the exception of a few clear, summer months, homeowners can expect more than 150 days of rain every year. Unfortunately, this kind of rainy climate can be destructive when it comes to roofs as constant rain is one of the most common causes of roof damage and decay in rainy climates. The following maintenance tips for rainy climates will help you keep your roof in optimal condition so that you can protect your home and belongings.

Regular Inspections

Nothing compares to regular, professional roof inspections with respect to maintaining your roof. A qualified roofer should inspect your roof at least once a year, but in rainy climates, regular spring and fall inspections are recommended. Your roofer will look for torn shingles, signs of leaks and decay, and damage to fixtures, gutters, and flashing.

Cleaning and Treating

In addition to inspections, you should have your roof cleaned and treated every three to five years. Again, it's best to hire a professional roofer not only for safety reasons, but to ensure the job is done right. In fact, many roofers will offer cleaning and treatment services along with inspections.

Ventilation

Adequate ventilation is also important for maintaining a roof in a rainy climate. Poor ventilation is one of the leading causes of premature decay. You should carefully monitor indoor temperature changes during the winter and summer months as unusually hot or cold internal temperatures during summer and winter respectively are a sign of poor ventilation. Your roofing professional should be contacted to correct ventilation problems.

Environmental Maintenance

During the fall and winter months in rainy climates, trees can pose a significant risk to your roof. Not only do falling leaves collect on your roof and rot, but rain, snow and wind storms can also cause overhanging limbs to crack, break and fall on your roof. Tree debris should be removed from your roof and overhanging limbs should be pruned to prevent damage.

Reality Check

While taking care to ensure proper roof maintenance throughout the year will protect your roof and extend its lifespan, the reality is that roofs in rainy climates tend to require more repairs. Furthermore, roofs in rainy climates will likely need to be replaced sooner than those found in regions with less inclement weather. Fortunately, roofing professionals can suggest the best materials for your climate so that repair and replacement can be prevented as long as possible. Still, you should be in regular contact with your roofer so that you know your home and belongings are protected throughout the worst weather months.
